I was introduced to the work of Sui Jianguo in 2008, and thereafter avidly researched documentation and exhibitions of his work. Four years later I had the privilege of meeting Sui here in Los Angeles, and in 2013 enjoyed an inspirational visit with him in
his Beijing studio. The rich body of work in the studio, coupled with the intelligence and grace of its maker, propelled this current exhibition, Sui’s first solo gallery show in the United States.

Sui Jianguo is one of the most important and influential artists working in China today. An educator as well as an artist, Sui’s teaching is inextricably linked to his own artistic pursuits. As Professor and Chair of the Sculpture Department at the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA), Beijing, Sui has been instrumental in addressing and enacting profound change within the Chinese arts educational system. Sui’s monumental success in restructuring China’s arts curriculum is adroitly articulated by art theorist Su Lei, who also contextualizes the trajectory of Sui’s career alongside China’s recent history in his thoughtful essay published in this catalogue.
